Rejected by YC 3x, raised Seed without them

Hey guys, I wanted to make this post because there’s been a lot of contention about YC and the value they provide. That, combined with a clear focus on AI, means that founders who don’t fit their cookie-cutter model need to stop putting YC on a pedestal and start looking elsewhere. My startup...

I would attend YC program for $0 capital. (Giving up % in company for chance) anybody else feel this way?

@leftoversheeptheresa Based on what? Most YC companies fail. They’re not hands on. They invest in people that can handle their own shit. If you feel like you - need - YC, you probably won’t get in.

@leftoversheeptheresa Yeah, basically. You don’t need YC to do any of that. It sounds like you’re looking for a shortcut - which YC is - but it comes with bad terms too.

@leftoversheeptheresa I’m from canada and raised millions in VC money from all US investors. No YC, pre revenue, consumer goods. That’s not a legit excuse.

Why does Y Combinator invest with a Most Favored Nation clause?

@leaniemeanie 12 spots vs 150+ and higher quality founders on average = more competitive. They’re also just one example. Same goes with Sequoia Arc, a16z’s program, HF0… Competition is a good thing. It’s now on YC to up their value (or not).

Why does Y Combinator invest with a Most Favored Nation clause?

@leaniemeanie lol they’re like 3 yrs old. They’re more competitive because their terms are better and their cohorts are smaller.

300 Applications later! Here is what I learned.

@mynu I’m a little late to this post but… I did something similar and applied to hundreds of accelerators. I got into a few and ended up raising a few million in Seed funding afterwards. What I learned is that: Most accelerators suck. The hardest ones to get into are usually the best - but...

Why does Y Combinator invest with a Most Favored Nation clause?

@clementinemoon It’s an added incentive. YC targets Ivy and ex-FAANG 1st time founders, and those founders would all prefer $125k for 7% + $375k MFN over $500k for 10%. They prefer this because they’re likely competitive and believe they can reduce the $375k hit by gunning for a $20m+ valuation...
